Grizzly Flag Football 2013
of years my two sons have been involved with VSA Soccer, Upwards Basketball program and the Bridlewood swim team. All were great experiences for our children and I hope we come back to them in the near future. We are just completing our first season with The Gainesville – Haymarket Youth Football Leage (GHYFL) Grizzlies. Our 8 year old wanted to skip everything and play basketball when it starts in December. Our six year old along with two of his friends decided that football is their sport. Now they are one playoff game day away from the end of their first season. Although all the kids have absolutely loved it, everyone seems to have decided that they are moving forward to the next level which of course is TACKLE Football.
This season has been my favorite so far in my short career as a sports parent, but that could be because they actually keep score and there is even a playoff not to mention that it’s my favorite sport. Keeping score does make it a little more interesting as the kids always want to know the outcome of these matches even when scores are not kept.
We practiced twice a week at Tyler Elementary School in Haymarket, sometimes it is a hassle since there is only one lane on Linton Hall road crossing over route 29 and at times we sit through multiple lights to cross. This will be resolved when the overpass is complete. All of our 7 games were in Bristow at the Grizzly Sports Complex just off of Vint Hill Road close to Patriot High School – much more convenient for us. We had a game every Sunday at 9 a.m. and it was great, the coaches did a great job, the team worked well together and if I complain about anything it would be about how fast the games flew by.
This Sunday is playoff day. We have a game at 9 a.m. and the winners will advance to the semi-finals which are played an hour later and winners will play the championship game another hour later. Our team finished in the 7th spot from 8 out of the 12 teams that made the playoffs. We have a very good kids who worked hard and their progress has been tremendous. They have really come together as a team and I am confident that they will do great on their final day of the season and whether they win one or not, I can guarantee you that they will have fun!
